For the functional organisation structure, can you explain why one of the weaknesses is a focus on specialism? To me it would seem more of a strength to have specialist individuals in an organisation.

  1. Student says:

In a functional organisation, such as a factory, individuals spend their whole career in one function such as finance, procurement or operations. The advantage of this is that they get very good at these skills the disadvantage is that they do not appreciate the roles of other departments and hence cross functional working becomes very difficult.

As always strength is also a weakness.
