PMP Certification Requierments

PMP certification requirements can cause significant confusion, mostly as a result of the distinction between pre-certification contact hours and post certification PDUs. However the rules are very simples and a clearly set out in the PMP certification handbook .

 

Basically there are two requirements the first is for experience and the second if for 35 hours of formal project management education. 

 

1) Requirements for experience

 

The requirements for experience are different if you have a bachelor degree

 

PMP Experience Requirements

With a bachelor degreeYou must have 3 years / 36 months of experience during which 4,500 hours must be leading project tasks

Without a bachelor degreeYou must have 5 years / 60 months of experience during which 7,500 hours must be spent leading or directing project tasks

 

 

In effect if you work and eight hour day for 220 days per year then you will need to spend the 3 years or 5 years working full time on projects to acquire the right number of hours of experience.

 

2) 35 hours of formal project management training

The second requirement is for 35 hours of formal project management training. However this can be acquired in a number of ways including:

 

Training delivered by a PMI Registered Education Provider

Training delivered by a PMI component such as a PMI chapter

Training delivered by a training company or consultant with an end of course certificate

Distance learning with an end of course certificate

A University training programme
