Updated PMP Certification launched by Parallel Project Training

A truly international group of delegates recently attended the updated PMP certification course in London. Based on the 5^th edition of the PMI Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBoK) this course in London was attended by project management professionals from UK, Germany, Saudi Arabia and UAE. Why was the PMP course updated following the publication of the 5^th edition of the PMI Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge?

The PMP Certification is based on the Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBoK) published by the Project Management Institute (PMI) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. The PMI is recognised as the leading global project management professional body with over 340,000 members. The PMI offers a wide range of qualification and it Project Management Professional (PMP) certification has achieved the status of being the most widely recognised and accepted project management qualification. It has a truly global reach with recognition not only in the USA and the UK but also in the gulf states in the Middle East, the emerging economies in Asia, South America and Africa.
The PMP certification used as it primary reference text the PMI Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge referred to by everyone in the industry as the PMBoK. To ensure the PMBok stays up to date with current practice this is updated every few years as a result of research by the PMI into the practical experience of project management. The latest update to the PMBok was released in January 2013 and the PMP certification is based was updated in July 2013. This course in August 2013 was Parallel Project Training first course following an update to align it with the 5^th edition of the PMBok and the revised exam. What are the changes in 5^th edition of the Guide to Project Management Body of Knowledge compared to the 4^th edition?

The changes to the 5^th edition of the PMBok are not major. The most significant change was the introduction of a new chapter on Stakeholder Management; previously this was covered as part of the communications chapter. This change reflects the increasing recognition of stockholders in the success of projects. In addition to this minor change there a number of detailed changes to the processes. The new edition is “structurally” similar to the old but the devil is in the detail and virtually no part of the BOK has escaped minor alterations and upgrades. Perhaps the main changes are the increase from 42 to 47 defined project management processes, three new processes strengthening the planning of the Scope, Time and Cost knowledge areas. The main “structural” change is the formal recognition of Stakeholder Management as a Knowledge Area (the 10^th) in its own right, as opposed to being a subset of Communications Management as in the old edition – this has expanded the number of processes relating to Stakeholder Management from 2 to 4. Other topics that have an increased depth of treatment include Requirements Management, Project Governance and Project Management Offices (PMO’s).
It also weighs in now at a whopping 589 pages compared to the older 459 pages!
