Description
Delivering projects in the sporting environment presents a distinct set of challenges. Funding is often limited and difficult to obtain, with a strong emphasis on demonstrating clear social value and community impact. Projects must be delivered to fixed, non-negotiable deadlines, such as tournaments or seasonal programmes. Professionals in sport are typically balancing competing priorities, frequently relying on volunteer resource, and requiring effective coordination and communication.
Topics Covered
- The course covers the key areas needed to deliver projects more effectively in a sporting environment, including:
- Project management basics, including the difference between projects, programmes and portfolios.
- Defining clear objectives, outcomes and benefits, including social value, sustainability and long-term impact.
- Setting up the project properly, with clear roles, responsibilities, governance and accountability.
- Engaging stakeholders, including funders, partners, governing bodies, volunteers and community groups.
- Planning the work, including scope, milestones, resources, dependencies and fixed deadlines such as events, tournaments or seasonal programmes.
- Managing risks, issues and changes as the project progresses.
- Communicating and reporting clearly, so that stakeholders understand progress and decisions can be made at the right time.
- Delegating work effectively, particularly where delivery relies on volunteers or people with competing priorities.
- Closing the project, capturing lessons learned and reviewing whether the intended benefits have been achieved.
