Getting Around Norwich
Walking provides the easiest way to cover central Norwich. The historic centre contains a mix of pedestrianised streets, lanes and riverside paths, allowing access to many restaurants and attractions without needing a car or public transport.
If you’d rather avoid walking but have arrived by train, then local buses cover the city centre and surrounding areas. Norwich also has dedicated cycling routes called ‘pedalways’ with bicycles are available for rent if you want to get in some exercise while attending a training course.
Norwich railway station sits east of the historic centre, roughly a 15-minute walk from the main shopping area at Station Approach, Norwich NR1 1EF. Direct trains run between Norwich and London Liverpool Street, with up to two services an hour on weekdays. The railway station also provides useful connections towards Cambridge, Ipswich, Stansted Airport and other destinations across East Anglia.
If you happen to be flying in for a training course, Norwich Airport is located around four miles north of the city centre, at Amsterdam Way, Norwich NR6 6JA. Travellers can use taxis or local buses, including the Airport Park & Ride service that runs directly into the city centre.
If you are driving, the A11 provides the main approach from Cambridge and London, while the A47 connects Norwich with destinations across Norfolk.
Famous Places and Landmarks
Norwich Cathedral ranks among the city’s defining landmarks. The Normans began its construction soon after their arrival, and its 96-metre spire now forms a prominent part of the Norwich skyline. The cathedral also has England’s largest monastic cloisters. Find it at 65 The Close, Norwich NR1 4DH.
Nearby, Norwich Castle stands on a distinctive mound above the centre. The Normans founded the castle, and Henry I completed its stone keep in the early 12th century. Today the site operates as Norwich Castle Museum & Art Gallery, located at Castle Hill, Norwich NR1 3JU.
For a shorter walk, visit Elm Hill, one of Norwich’s best-known historic streets, before continuing through the Cathedral Quarter. Norwich Market at 1 Market Place, Norwich NR2 1ND also deserves attention. The market remains one of the country’s oldest large open-air markets.
