Adrian Taggart B.Eng (Hons), M.Sc., C.Eng., M.I.Mech.E., MAPM, PMP
Profile:
Adrian has an extensive record of achievement in the project management environment both as a practising project manager, and also as a widely respected consultant and trainer within the discipline. He offers the following skills and attributes:
- Direct experience of the management of a variety of high profile national and international infrastructure projects, in both client and supplier roles.
- Wide ranging academic (post-graduate) and professional qualifications in the discipline of project management.
- Broad experience as a consultant to a range of UK clients advising, supporting and training their project management communities.
- Contributed to the development of the profession by writing a number of published articles and arranging open seminars.
- Natural empathy and talent for teaching and mentoring roles.
Key Achievements:
Adrian started his career within the UK defence sector (MOD) and after graduating focused on engineering projects, progressing to the management of multi-million pound projects installing hydro power stations in many of the more remote locations around the world. The logistical, technical, commercial and cultural aspects of these endeavours provided a major project management challenge.
Adrian then successfully stepped into the academic sector where he developed and delivered the “People in Projects” module of the M.Sc. in Project Management at Leeds Met. University. His wealth of practical experience and natural communication skills made him a popular and valued member of the academic team.
Stepping back into the commercial sector, Adrian now offers consultancy and training in the field of project management to various corporate clients such as Transport for London, Scott Wilson and Thames Water.
About Coventry
Located in the West Midlands region, Coventry can be found on the banks of the River Sherbourne. There has been a large settlement in this area for centuries. During WWII, Coventry was the site of the single most concentrated attack on a city that took place. The Cathedral was left in ruins and has since been replaced with a more modern building which stands alongside the original. Much of the city was also rebuilt to create a vibrant modern city that offers a real mix of the old and the new.
Coventry is one of the most accessible cities in the UK. It is situated right in the centre of the country and accessible by all forms of transport and from almost any destination.
It has great train links and the journey time from London to Coventry is just 1 hour, it is around 20 minutes from Birmingham and between 2 hours and 2.5 hours from Manchester. The station is located close to the centre of Coventry and is well placed for local bus links into the centre.
The closest airport is Birmingham which has arrivals from the Middle East, Europe and the Indian subcontinent, as well as many other airports within the UK. There are 130 trains per day connecting the airport with Coventry city centre, and the 11-mile journey takes around 14 minutes.
For those people who prefer to visit Coventry by car, there is easy access to the motorway network. The M6 (and the M6 Toll), M40, M42, M5, M69 and the A54/46 are all major routes in and out of the city and the wider area. Coventry is also linked to central Birmingham by road, and the journey takes just 20 minutes. There are also good National Express links to Birmingham and Coventry, making coach an alternative travel option.
The majority of project management courses last a couple of days which means it is necessary to book a room in a nearby hotel, and Coventry has plenty of great hotels to choose from with some excellent facilities.
Ramada Hotel and Suites – CV1 3GG
A 10-minute walk from the station, the Ramada Hotel and Suites is situated right in the heart of Coventry. There is on-site payable parking, and the hotel has access to good public transport links making it very easy to get to. All of the rooms are spacious and modern and have all of the amenities that you would expect. There is a well-equipped business centre on-site and meeting rooms can be booked at additional cost. The hotel also has its own award-winning restaurant.
Warwick Conference – Radcliffe – CV4 7SH
For those who prefer to visit Coventry by car and do not mind being a little distance from the city centre, Warwick Conference, which is located on the campus of Warwick University, is a fantastic choice. There is plenty of free onsite parking here. The rooms are all modern and spacious and ideal for those who might need to keep in touch with the office whilst on a course. There is a well-equipped business suite, and meeting rooms can be hired at an additional cost. The hotel is set in rural parkland and surrounded by lakes. As you might expect for a hotel on a university campus, there is a comprehensive range of sports facilities available to guests of the hotel.
DoubleTree by Hilton Coventry Building Society Arena – CV6 6AQ
On the outskirts of Coventry, you will find Double Tree by Hilton. The arena-adjacent location of the hotel means that not only is it incredibly close to one of Coventry’s railway stations but that all of the rooms offer views out over the arena. There is ample parking, but this is charged at an additional daily rate. The hotel has meeting rooms and a business suite making it easy to stay in touch with the office.
Whilst you stay in Coventry for a couple of days, it is well worth exploring the local area and there is certainly plenty to keep you occupied.
Restaurants
The diverse culture of Coventry is reflected in its cuisine. Here you will find everything from good pub grub to chain restaurants, small bistros to ethnic restaurants.
There are no Michelin stared restaurants in Coventry itself. However, those who are looking for somewhere a little special to eat out will be spoilt for choice in nearby Warwick or Birmingham, where there are restaurants with Bib Gourmand status and also a number of restaurants with Michelin stars. One local restaurant that has been gaining much attention in the last couple of years, with a mention in both the Michelin Guide and the Guardian Newspaper, is Land (B2 5HU), a plant-based eatery located on Colmore Row in Birmingham.
For those diners looking for food that really hits a spicy note, then Jinseon near the Cathedral( CV1 5SA) is a popular choice serving Korean BBQ. Habibi on Far Gosford Street (CV1 5EA) is great for Arabic food, or try My Dhabba (CV1 3AX) for authentic curries.
Entertainment
If you want to see something of the Old Coventry, then Spon Street is the place to visit at night. This restored medieval street runs through the centre of the city and is a great place to grab a drink and a bite to eat.
Coventry is also home to one of the largest casinos in the UK. The Grosvenor Casino is located just below the Ricoh Arena (CV6 6GE) and, in addition to a wide range of games to test your luck, also hosts talent shows, tribute bands and quiz nights.
The SkyDome is home to Coventry Blaze, the local ice hockey team and when there are no training sessions or games, the rink is open to the general public for skating. There is also a cinema on site. For those that prefer a theatre, Coventry has a number of options, including the Criterion, which is a great venue to watch smaller productions.
