Carmen Campos
As part of my current role as a training consultant, I felt that my personal experience of gaining chartered status would enable me to help other people to growth in their project management careers. Becoming a ChPP has given me an opportunity to make a difference and help people to progress professionally. It allows me to be part of their development journey through all the levels and qualifications from Project Fundamental (PFQ) and Project Management Qualification (PMQ) and up to ChPP level. Going through the process myself has also taught me the commitment and dedication required to successfully pass, which serves me well when trying to coach and support others to obtain ChPP in the future.
About Falmouth
Falmouth is a stunning town on the Cornish coast. Located in the southwest of England, it has plenty of attractions to recommend it as a destination. Whilst it may not be everyone’s first choice of location to attend a project management course, for those based in the South-West of England, it has everything that you could need, including some fantastic scenery.
Transport
Falmouth is serviced by a robust transport network making it a very easy town to get to. By road, the journey is very simple once you reach Exeter as you can join the newly improved A30, which will offer you some stunning scenery over Bodmin Moor and Dartmouth, before joining the A39, which will bring you directly to Falmouth. The Great Western Railway offers you an easily accessible train route with a branch line linking Falmouth directly to the main line at Truro.
Newquay airport can be reached from a number of European destinations as well as several UK locations. From the airport, it is just a short taxi ride to Falmouth. Falmouth can also be reached using the National Express coach service for a stress-free journey.
Face-to-face, classroom-based project management courses can last up to a week so finding suitable accommodation is a must. Fortunately, there are plenty of suitable smaller hotels in the area; if you prefer a chain hotel, then you may want to consider hotels in Truro for your stay.
The Falmouth Hotel, Castle Beach, Falmouth TR11 4NZ
Located right in the centre of Falmouth, this is a 4-star hotel with plenty of facilities. Parking is included in the price, and there is free wifi and also business services available at the hotel, making it a great choice for those who may need to stay in touch with the office whilst attending a training course. The train station is just an 8-minute walk away and the airport a 40-minute drive. The hotel is wheelchair accessible as well. The hotel benefits from its own meeting room so it could be the base for your training course as well.
Hotel Meudon, Maenporth Rd, Mawnan Smith, Maenporth, Falmouth TR11 5HT
Located a few miles outside the centre of Falmouth, the Hotel Meudon is a country house hotel with large grounds and its own private beach. There is plenty of parking and free wifi in the hotel. This is a very good choice of hotel for disabled access and they also cater very well to a range of different dietary requirements. If you want a hotel that is completely separate from your training course location and gives you the chance to unwind, then this is a superb choice.
Membly Hall Hotel, Cliff Rd, Falmouth TR11 4NT
Steeped in history, this family-run hotel located right on the beach offers something a little different. The hotel has plenty of free onsite parking, and Wi-Fi is available throughout the building. With an onsite restaurant and some leisure facilities, the hotel is easy to get to and provides a great base from which to attend a training course in the vicinity.
Meeting rooms for training courses in Falmouth
Hotels in the Falmouth area tend to be either family run with an emphasis on holidaymakers or on the smaller side, which means that you will probably need to look a little further away for the sort of larger meeting room facilities that you would want to hire for any training course requirements.
Bridge House, Melvill Rd, Falmouth TR11 4GJ
Located in Falmouth, Bridge House is the location of Falmouth Training Solutions. They are a small company with two meeting rooms available to hire. Each of these is suitable for up to 20 people, making them a very good choice for smaller training courses. Bridge House has onsite parking, overhead projectors, wireless broadband and connectivity, and refreshment facilities. The central location means there is no need for onsite catering as there are plenty of local places to get food during your course.
St Mawes Castle, Castle Dr, St Mawes, Truro TR2 5DE
Another Falmouth location and certainly one with something a little different to offer, St Mawes Castle, has a couple of rooms that are available to hire for events or training. They offer all of the facilities that you would need for a successful training course.
Best Western Penmere Manor Hotel, Mongleath Rd, Falmouth TR11 4PN
A 3-star hotel located a little over a mile outside the centre of Falmouth. The Penmere Manor Hotel is one of the few hotels you will find in Falmouth with large meeting room facilities. There is good onsite parking, free Wi-Fi and their meeting room is furnished with everything you could need on a training course.
If your training course is set to run for several days, then Falmouth is a wonderful area to explore with plenty of ways to spend your downtime. Here is just a sample of some of the things this wonderful area has to offer:
Restaurants
Whilst there are some truly incredible places to eat in Falmouth itself, as you would expect given the proliferation of fresh seafood and fish right on their doorstep, there is only one Michelin star restaurant. Hooked on the Rocks, as the name would suggest, is a spacious modern bistro specialising in seafood. The restaurant is relatively new to the Michelin “family”, having its first mention in the guide in 2021. The food is fresh and contemporary and takes its inspiration from the wonderful local ingredients.
Of course, when it comes to eateries in Falmouth, you will find that there are plenty to choose from. From smaller bistros to gastropubs, traditional fish and chip restaurants to places specialising in seafood, the one thing you can be assured of is incredibly fresh well-cooked food.
Entertainment
If you are looking for somewhere with a thriving nightlight that offers plenty of clubs, then Falmouth isn’t that location. However, what Falmouth may lack in clubs, it more than makes up for with its spectacular selection of bars. This is not somewhere where you will find any of the big-name bars or pubs but rather a selection of smaller individual establishments with their own unique quirks.
Beerwolf Books Freehouse is a very quirky place to get a drink and browse a rather wonderful selection of books for a completely different evening drinking concept. You will also find The Games Room in the heart of Falmouth. Again they offer something a little different. Aside from the more usual pool that you might expect to find, they also have a wide range of board games, table tennis and even shuffleboard to keep you occupied. They also have a good range of beer, cider and spirits on offer.
