Short-Listed For APM Awards Social Project Of The Year

We are delighted to have been short-listed for the APM Awards 2017 in the Social Project of the Year category. These awards have been celebrating project management excellence for over 20 years and recognise the very best the profession has to offer.

Background

At the end of last year we worked with Streetworks on an ambitious project management workshop at the City Heights Academy near Brixton for young people in Years 8 – 10. Streetworks is a community-led project in Lambeth that is working to transform the local area and build skills in the community.

Streetworks and Parallel Project Training had worked together over a 6 month period to develop an introductory PM workshop that was more accessible and better suited to young people than existing courses. It uses simple language aimed specifically at young people and adults unfamiliar with a project environment.

The aim of the workshop was to broaden the young peoples’ aspirations and influence their GCSE and career options, but also provide practical skills they can use to make a difference in their community.

Parallel and Streetworks developed a simple Project Toolbox based on the APM lifecycle that Streetworks can use for future workshops in schools and community groups.

Community Projects

Some of the real-life projects completed successfully as part of this initiative included:

  • Creating a Community Market
  • Creating a Community Garden
  • Organising a Street Party – including the music and popup food shops

These projects helped the young people involved to develop highly transferable skills such as planning, budgeting and communication that will help them in their future careers and also enable them to make a real contribution to their community.

The APM Awards ceremony will be held on Monday 20 November 2017 and we will keep you posted as soon as we know who the final winners are. Wish us luck!

Streetworks is a community-led project funded by Transport for London (TfL) that works collaboratively with local forums and other partners to improve the local area and build skills within their community. They are building a legacy for future generations supported by volunteers with a wealth of local knowledge.
