If you’re considering becoming a Chartered Project Professional (ChPP), you may be wondering how APM’s upcoming ChPP assessment changes could affect your plans.
Applications under the current assessment process are expected to close on 24th March 2027, with the new assessment launching on 24th May 2027. Whether you have already started the ChPP application process or plan to start soon, you still have plenty of time and support to complete your application under the current assessment.
To help you understand your options and plan your next steps, we’ve summarised the key changes, important dates and what they could mean for your journey to chartership below.
What is changing?
Here’s what is changing and what it means for your preparation.
1. Application-based submission replaced by Assessment-based model
The current process is being replaced by a structured assessment consisting of:
- Written examination (Technical Knowledge)
- Oral Accountability & Complexity assessment.
- Portfolio presentation (Professional Practice)
The written examination applies only to Pathways 1 and 3. The oral and presentation requirements also vary by pathway, so first check which assessment components apply to you.
| Pathway | Current assessment | New assessment from May 2027 |
| 1 | Written submission + two-hour interview covering professional practice, technical knowledge and ethics. | 90-minute written exam + 35-minute accountability and complexity oral assessment + 35-minute professional practice portfolio presentation. |
| 2 | Written submission + 75-minute interview covering professional practice and ethics. | A 35-minute accountability and complexity oral assessment + 35-minute professional practice portfolio presentation. |
| 3 | Written submission + one-hour interview assessing technical knowledge and ethics. | 90-minute written exam, 35-minute accountability and complexity oral assessment + 10-minute presentation on ethics, compliance and professionalism. |
| 4 | CPD log + 30-minute interview covering CPD, current practice and ethics. | A five-minute project summary + 10-minute presentation on ethics, compliance and professionalism. |
Where your pathway includes both written and oral assessments, the exam must come first, and both must be completed within a two-week window. We would recommend preparing for them together so you’re ready for both before your first assessment.
Ethics, compliance and professionalism will be assessed across all pathways. These remain part of the Chartered standard.
2. One Application, One Fee, One Result
APM has also simplified the application process and consolidated the results process. You’ll make one application and pay one fee, then receive one set of results
3. Proposers are no longer required
You will no longer be required to provide details of two proposers.
Using AI ethically
APM recognises that AI tools may be used to support preparation, provided your use is transparent and ethical in line with the integrity of the assessment. Therefore, APM has introduced guidance on what is and isn’t considered acceptable use of AI.
For example, you may use it to explore ideas or make your wording clearer, but your assessment must reflect your own experience and thinking. AI must not be used to write your assessment answers or complete your presentation. You’ll be required to declare how you have used it.
What stays the same?
The ChPP standard and competences remain unchanged. Existing recognised assessments for the four pathways will continue to be accepted, and applicants will still need to demonstrate the same level of professional competence.
Regardless of which assessment route you follow, your ChPP status will carry the same professional recognition and value.
Already preparing, or hoping to apply soon?
Although applications are expected to close on 24 March 2027, APM may close submissions earlier if capacity is reached. Interviews under the current format must be completed by 11 June 2027.
If you’re already preparing, we recommend submitting well before March to allow time for revisions and interview preparation.
If you’re just starting, consider whether you can realistically meet the current assessment deadlines or whether the new assessment would better suit your timescales.
What if you are getting started, but want to apply under the new assessment format?
If you decide that the new assessment format is better suited to your circumstances and timescales, you can continue developing your knowledge and reflecting on your professional experience in preparation for its introduction in May 2027.
The Chartered Standard competences and criteria remain unchanged, so your preparation will still be relevant. We’ll continue to monitor APM’s guidance and share updates to help you prepare.
